KZUM’s second annual Blues Blowout concert will feature a triple bill of blues performers headlined by Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials on Friday, Sept. 1, at The Zoo Bar.

The Heather Newman Band, of Kansas City, and Lincoln’s Levi William Band will round things out, beginning with a 5 p.m. FAC. The evening will feature a silent auction of items that inlcude a guitar signed by Charlie Musselwhite, members of The Paladins and over a dozen other artists. All money raised from ticket sales and the auction will benefit KZUM.

The concert will kick off KZUM’s Blues Blowout on the air, which preempts regular programming during Labor Day Weekend. The annual event will feature many KZUM programmers offering their favorite takes on the blues between 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, and the end of the day on Monday, Sept. 4.

Blues Blowout will also lead up to KZUM’s final full-scale fund drive of the year, set for Sept. 5-12. The station is again working to close the gap on our goal to raise $300,000 by the end of our fiscal year on Sept. 30 to remain eligble for Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding. The long-running grant has provided KZUM with about $70,000 in annual funding for at least the last 15 years.

Tickets for the Blues Blowout benefit concert are $15 and available at The Zoo Bar and the KZUM business office, 3534 S 48th Street, Suite 6, Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30 p.m.

The Performers

Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials (9 p.m.) have been a fixture in the rich Chicago blues scene for nearly 30 years. No strangers to Lincoln and The Zoo Bar, the band is known for showcasing Lil Ed’s signature bottleneck slide playing with boogie and soul-driven vocals. The band’s latest labum, The Big Sound of Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials was released in April on Alligator Records. Find out more via the Alligator.com.

The Heather Newman Band (7 p.m.) draws on influences that bring the worlds of rock, soul and blues music together. Originally from Omaha, Newman got her start at a young age, through the Blues Ed program, fronting groups since 2006. In 2015, Newman moved to Kansas City and toured with the Nick Schnebelen Band for about a year and a half before picking up the bass guitar to front her own band. Their debut album, Burn Me Alive is being crowdfunded now via their website, heathernewmanband.com.

The Levi William Band (5 p.m.) has established itself as one of Nebraska’s premier blues outfits. The power trio consisting of William on guitar and voclas, Brian Farr on bass and Josh Topolski on drums, has one album under its belts and draws on the sounds of blues legends for a great live blend of originals and well-chosen covers. William first came on the scene at the age of 13 and has played with other blues bands since he was 16, including time on the road with Shawn Holt and the Teardrops.
