Saturday night, downtown Lincoln will be treated to a medium of performance it rarely gets to experience: modern dance. Lincoln has grown into a burgeoning music community with diverse influences and a growing art scene. As these art forms have begun to take off, Lincoln’s dance community’s fuse is just beginning to be lit.

Marisol Herling and Beth Jensen became friends through classes at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and participated at the Slo Dance company before starting Embi in March. Since their formation, the duo has performed at the Sheldon Art Museum for First Fridays and has also collaborated with the downtown association to bring their style of dance to Tower Square

Mixing modern dance with local music, the pair bring their own creativity to a Lincoln art scene that is exploding. This weekend, the dancers will collaborate with Mary Lawson of Mesonjixx, C Balta of Once A Pawn, and Jason Martin-Tardy of Dude Won’t Die for an evening of, as their Facebook page puts it, “dancing, live music, coffee, and cocktails.”

This will be the first step toward future collaborations between Embi and local musicians. In an interview with The Daily Nebraskan, Beth Jensen said “it’s been really exciting and fun to work with all of these local musicians, whom we have seen play before at different shows and enjoy their music. Being able to collaborate with them and bring something unique alongside them onstage is really rewarding.”
