Sunken Gardens 2021 “Ruby Slippers” Theme A Reminder There’s No Place Like Lincoln

Over the weekend, more than 60 volunteers helped install the annuals at Sunken Gardens for their Wake Up The Beds event. This year’s “Ruby Slippers” theme harkens back to the original intent of the gardens when it was created in the midst of the Depression: to provide something beautiful to the city of Lincoln in uncertain times, and to remind the community that there’s no place like home.

Give to Lincoln Day Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

The first Give To Lincoln Day exceeded all expectations. With just a little over 100 nonprofits participating in 2011, they reached their quiet goal of $1 million. Since then, the event has steadily grown. In 2020, a record $7 million was raised in the community from about 28,000 donations.

Police Reform Bill Considered by Nebraska Legislature

The bill sets a base level of expectations for the accreditation of individual law enforcement agencies across the state. Some larger agencies already meet or exceed many of these newly proposed requirements. The legislation requires that a set amount of hours be dedicated to areas relating to de-escalation training, anti-bias training, and substance abuse training for both annual continuing education and initial officer certification.

Nebraska Bill Introduced to Create 988 Mental Health Hotline Task Force

In the face of the pandemic, mental health deterioration as a result of financial hardship, social isolation, healthcare-related anxiety, and the general stress of dealing with uncertainty has remained a national concern. In response to the staggering need for public mental health support, Nebraska recently introduced LB247, a bill to create a 3-digit Mental Health Crisis Hotline Task Force.
