KZUM is honored to have been awarded with a 2016 Lincoln and Lancaster County Environmental Leadership Award for a community nonprofit organization.

The award was presented at a ceremony and breakfast on Wednesday morning at the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center.

Scott Holmes, Environmental Public Health division manager at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, said the awards recognize businesses, organizations and individuals who have demonstrated environmental leadership in sustaining and improving air, land and water quality and protecting public health.

KZUM was recognized for its commitment to highlighting environmental issues on the air through long-form programming, including the “Earth to Lincoln” and “How’s it Growin’?” programs, as well as the countless public service announcements heard on the station for environmental and sustainability causes in the city and the state.

The 2016 award recipients are:

  • Business and Industry – Uribe Refuse Services, Inc. and Duncan Aviation
  • Agriculture – Grow with the Flow and Old Cheney Road Farmers’ Market
  • Education/Nonprofit Organization – Don Wilhite, Ph.D.
  • Community Nonprofit Organization – EcoStores Nebraska and KZUM 89.3 FM
  • Government – Lincoln Electric System
  • Individual Citizen – Gene Hanlon, City Recycling Coordinator

Holmes said the award winners have been instrumental in identifying, reducing or solving an environmental problem or promoting public awareness and concern for the enhancement and protection of the environment.  He said winners have also demonstrated active stewardship in one or more of the following environmental practices: pollution prevention/risk reduction, waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, soil conservation and energy conservation.

We at KZUM are incredibly humbled to be honored alongside these other great individuals and organizations who are leaders in our community. Thank you to KZUM’s volunteer programmers, local organizations and all the loyal listeners who made this award possible.
