Meet the KZUM News Interns

“Public media is the voice of a society, but community radio is the voice of the people. Community radio is a direct pipeline to the issues that impact people closest. It is a route of connection, one of the purest, most unfiltered ways we can hear each other’s opinions and grow as a community. This is what community radio means to me.” Rebecca Ford New Layer Nebraska Wesleyan University KZUM News Intern January 2025 - May 2025 At the time of her internship with KZUM, Rebecca Ford was a sophomore at Nebraska Wesleyan University, working on her bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies. During her internship, Rebecca focused on reporting about extreme weather events and political unrest. This included stories highlighting the impact of fires in western Nebraska and a multi-part piece about post-election unrest in Nebraska. “I have applied these skills to my position as news director at KWSC, the campus radio station at Wayne State College. As we did at KZUM, I try to emphasize the impact of nationwide content at a local level. Amantha’s mentorship has led me to mentor fellow students and encourage them to produce meaningful, informative content and innovative news programming. I saw firsthand the importance of developing personal relationships in the radio industry and encouraged my classmates to do likewise.” Grant Ferrell New Layer Wayne State College KZUM News Intern May 2022 - August 2022 Grant Ferrell was the first KZUM News intern. With a summer internship in exchange for credit through his institution, Wayne State College, Grant helped KZUM News hit the ground running. He assisted in building the reporting network. This means that he reported on everything from politics to local events. KZUM News - Sept. 6, 2025 Nargis Yarmand KZUM News Intern May 2025 - October 2025 After immigrating to Lincoln from Afghanistan, Nargis Yarmand had a strong interest in science journalism. During her internship with KZUM, Nargis focused on healthcare reporting with stories about the social isolation of older adults and the importance of social networks among immigrant communities. Listen to the episode 2024 Election Coverage Macy Byars New Layer University of Nebraska–Lincoln KZUM News Intern May 2024 - February 2025 Originally from West Omaha, Macy Byars was a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln working on a bachelor's in Journalism and Broadcasting at the time of her internship. With plenty of experience as a student content creator, Macy wanted to challenge herself by focusing on covering politically heavy subjects. This included stories surrounding the Nebraska Legislature and election content. View coverage “At its core, public media is meant to broaden our knowledge of the world and expand it to a large audience- it proves that information does not have to be paid for. Enriching your life is free, and it should be accessible to everyone, no matter where they come from. It's a lesson I've kept close with me for many years, and which has shaped my morals. If anything, public media has raised me, taught me, and nurtured me into a fuller, better person.” Abel Nespor New Layer Lincoln Public Schools KZUM News Intern May 2024 - February 2025 Abel Nespor was a high school student on the cusp of graduating when he applied for KZUM’s production internship. Interested in working with sound production in the future, he wanted to explore the radio side of sound production. He worked closely with Lucas Anderson, KZUM’s Producer, to create content for on-air broadcast. KZUM News - August 23, 2025 Grace Madsen Union College KZUM News Intern May 2025 - October 2025 At the beginning of her internship, Grace Madsen was transitioning into the field of broadcast journalism after working in human services for ten years. During her time with KZUM, she took an interest in a variety of subjects, from healthcare to politics. Her first story profiled the Grace Space, an end-of-life care facility. Listen to the episode “Lincoln is the best representation of the term 'Midwest Nice' because all of the people are friendly, even if it's just passing on the street. And there are no other local businesses like there are here. KZUM is the best way for people in the community to reach out to each other with information, and for the community to get closer together.” Jacob Wiemer Lincoln Public Schools Production Intern January 2025 - August 2025 Jacob Wiemer was a high school student on the cusp of graduating when he applied for KZUM’s production internship. Interested in working with broadcast media in the future, Jacob wanted to focus first on learning more about the technical aspects of production. He worked closely with Lucas Anderson, KZUM’s Producer, to create content for on-air broadcast. Mundo Latino - July 5, 2025 Alex Gryczanowski University of Nebraska-Lincoln Social Media Intern January 2025 - July 2025 Through an internship program with the Foundry, Alex Gryczanowsky was the social media intern for KZUM during the Spring 2025 semester. A student with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s CoJMC program, Alex focused on creating social media campaigns to highlight the work KZUM does. This included a weekly newsletter program and revitalizing KZUM’s YouTube. Listen to the episode

Mission Statement

Established in 1978, KZUM is a noncommercial, listener-support community radio station licensed to Sunrise Communications Inc. As a whole, KZUM aims to educate and build community through broadcast media, with diverse and independent voices that enrich the perspectives of our audiences.

The mission of the KZUM newsroom adds the goal of accurately and fairly reporting on local matters impacting Lincoln, Nebraska, and the surrounding area. The following guidelines are meant to protect the impartiality of the news we produce and apply to all staff members or volunteers – including interns, journalists, and editors – of the KZUM news department.

Listener Engagement Policy

KZUM listeners are the foundation of our community. We respect our listeners and we always aim to prioritize compassion, inclusivity, and collaboration. For this reason, our doors – and the lines of communication – are always open. We encourage listeners to share any concerns or suggestions with us. This can be done using the KZUM website or by contacting the news department directly.

The public can request any documentation that accompanies the content we produce. The only exception to this rule applies to data regarding unidentified or minor sources. Members of the public can contact the news department with any documentation requests.
