Local artists, MS ATM 22, Death Cow and Omaha-native, David Nance Group, were on the bill at Duffy’s Tavern this past Saturday night. The night’s music ranged from experimental-electronic, to garage punk and rock ‘n’ roll.

The first act of the night was a bit of a mystery, in the best way possible. The stage was dark, only a fluorescent-square light, a Korg synthesizer, a microphone, a lit spiral candle and MS ATM 22. The music started with a haunting arrangement that made one feel like they were entering the Twilight zone before being interrupted by a gong that led into a peaceful melody, then into a sequence that had people clapping along and back again. The set took the audience on a mental and emotional journey that left the audience ready for the next two bands.

Next up, Death Cow, a garage-punk band that delivered a high-energy performance. If Death Cow is new to you than you might be a little surprised to see them jumping around stage and pushing each other but moshing is a must when seeing this band or at least some serious head banging. The band performed songs from their new album, Slow Drown, that can be found on Spotify and Bandcamp.

Ending the night, David Nance, took the stage and quickly starts shredding on the guitar with a tune that nods to Pink Floyd. The performance was intimate, it felt as if we were all friends in a basement watching the band jam together. In fact, Nance dedicated a song to an audience member by name. One could categorize Nance’s music as rock ‘n’ roll but there is also so much more in it. It has hints of punk, it’s aggressive, grungy, passionate, loud, rambunctious; it can be smooth and then distorted. Seemingly conflicting adjectives and yet, Nance finds a way to melt them together to create a wonderfully unique sound.

Nance’s most recent album, Negative Boogie, which has made it on to Noisey’s “100 Best Albums of 2017.” Earlier this year Nance went on tour for the first time in Europe and Nance still has more shows coming up. The next show for the band is August 18, where the band will perform at the Maha Music Festival in Omaha and then will be headed to Chicago for a show on September 15.
