A town hall conversation on building a safer community will feature a panel of community leaders and stakeholders this Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ted Sorensen Auditorium at Lincoln High School, 2229 J St.
Thanks to the efforts of Lincoln Public Schools, KZUM will carry the event live over the air on 89.3 FM and kzum.org. “The Exposition Flyer” will not be heard Thursday and “Night Town” will start 30 minutes late, at 9 p.m.
The event is being presented by Lincoln Public Schools, the Lincoln Journal Star and the Lincoln Community Foundation.
The town hall panel, moderated by Joe Starita, a journalism professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will include:
- Jeff Bliemeister: Chief of the Lincoln Police Department
- Steve Joel: Superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools
- Leirion Gaylor Baird: Lincoln City Council member
- Korey Reiman: attorney and president of “Parents United for Greater School Security”
- John Harris: pastor, First Baptist Church; president, Encouragement Unlimited, Inc.
- Katie McLeese Stephenson: executive director, Child Guidance Center
- Connie Duncan: Lincoln School Board member
- Maia Ramsey: Lincoln High School student
- Joe Starita, University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor, moderator
The community conversation between panelists and audience members will include topics of school safety, mental health services, weapons, the impact of violent video games and bullying and the roles that faith organizations and Community Learning Centers can play in building a strong community.
All Lincoln community members are encouraged to attend. Parking is available in the surface lots north of Lincoln High and east of the Lewis baseball fields. Doors at the main entrance will open at 6:30 p.m.
